Iowa Navy Veteran Jim Budwig Passes Away at 81

CHARLES CITY, Iowa — James “Jim” E. Budwig, an esteemed U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully at his home on June 18, 2025, at the age of 81. His family confirmed that a Celebration of Life will be held later at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home.
Born on January 3, 1944, in Charles City, Jim graduated from Charles City High School in 1963. He soon enlisted in the Navy, where he achieved the rare distinction of becoming a Golden Shellback after crossing the equator at the 180th meridian. He served proudly during the Vietnam War, embodying an adventurous spirit.
In 1972, Jim married Judith Ann Jacobsen. The couple settled in Colwell, Iowa, where they raised their two children, Katie and Jacob. Jim worked as a welder at Hydrotile in Nashua and later joined the Charles City School District staff until his retirement.
Jim and Judy were active members of the Colwell United Church of Christ. They enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and spending time outdoors. Following Judy’s passing in 2023, Jim moved to the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, where he was fondly known as “Cowboy Jim.” His warm personality allowed him to foster many friendships with staff and residents.
He had a unique gift for making others feel valued, which mirrored his love for animals as he raised various pets throughout his life, including cats, chickens, turkeys, and even a goat.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents; his brother, Herbert Jr.; and nieces, Holly and Lisa. He is survived by his children Katie (Aaron) Kelly and Jacob Budwig; grandchildren Avery and Clay; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember his cheerful spirit and infectious laughter.
The family requests that memorials be directed either to them or to the Colwell Fire Department and First Responders in Jim’s honor. Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home is handling arrangements, and online condolences can be left on their Tribute Wall.
