Iowa Snowstorm School Closings February 2025

DES MOINES, Iowa — Several school districts across Iowa have announced cancellations for Wednesday classes due to a forecasted snowstorm expected to deliver 6 to 9 inches of snow in central and southeastern parts of the state. The persistent cold temperatures combined with anticipated snowfall has prompted officials to prioritize student safety.

Metro districts including Johnston, Dallas CenterGrimes, Saydel, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, and Waukee confirmed cancellations late Tuesday. As a result, students are urged to stay home and avoid travel as conditions worsen.

“We want to ensure the safety of our students and staff, especially with potentially hazardous road conditions from accumulating snow,” said Urbandale superintendent Dr. Anne D. Cram. She emphasized the proactive measures taken to assess weather impacts on the district.

The snow is set to begin overnight, starting in southwestern Iowa, as early as midnight. Light to moderate snow is expected to cover much of the state by morning, continuing throughout the day before tapering off in the evening. Wind gusts are projected to remain mild, around 20 miles per hour, mitigating concerns about blowing and drifting snow.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest accumulations are anticipated in southern Iowa, where the system will have more moisture. However, the northern regions may see lighter, fluffier snow due to colder temperatures.

Current predictions suggest central and southeastern Iowa will experience the most snowfall, adding to a wintry landscape with up to 8 inches of snow expected by Wednesday night. Areas in northern Iowa, including Spencer, Emmetsburg, and Mason City, are warned of significantly colder temperatures, with wind chills dipping to 10 to 15 degrees below zero.

The following school districts have officially canceled classes for Wednesday:

  • Johnston Community School District
  • Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District
  • Saydel Community School District
  • Southeast Polk Community School District
  • Urbandale Community School District
  • Waukee Community School District

Weather has become a significant concern since many schools had already dealt with delays due to icy conditions earlier in February. School officials are aware that weather delays and closures disrupt educational routines but prioritize student safety above all.

“While it’s unfortunate to miss instructional time, keeping our students safe from harsh weather conditions is our top priority,” said Dr. Cram.

Residents are advised to prepare for slick road conditions and consider delaying travel plans until later in the day when the snowfall is expected to lighten. KCCI‘s skycam page is providing real-time updates showing conditions from various sites across the state.
