DES MOINES, Iowa — With frigid temperatures gripping Iowa following a significant snowfall, many school districts across the state have announced delays or cancellations for classes on Thursday, February 13, 2025.
The Des Moines Public Schools have reported a two-hour delay, while other central Iowa districts, including Carlisle, Norwalk, Indianola, Marshalltown, and Perry, also plan to start late. Some schools, such as Chariton, Knoxville, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, East Union, and Mormon Trail, have opted to close entirely.
The weather forecast indicated overnight temperatures dropping to single digits below zero, with wind chills making it feel even colder, prompting school officials to prioritize student safety. “We want to make sure our students are safe and that roads are manageable for travel,” said a spokesperson from the Des Moines Public Schools.
As of Thursday morning, many roadways remain covered with snow, especially in southern Iowa where snowfall totals have reached up to 6.5 inches. Conditions are challenging along highways 92 and 34, with reports of reduced visibility due to blowing snow.
Weather experts from KCCI predict temperatures to remain harsh in the coming days, with another snow event expected this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the coldest temperatures are anticipated Thursday morning, with wind chills ranging from 20 to 30 degrees below zero. This could lead to further travel difficulties.
“It’s crucial for people to stay aware of weather updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly,” advised a local meteorologist. “From what we’re seeing, conditions are forecasted to gradually improve, and with that, we may see more schools assess their schedules.”
On social media, concerned parents expressed their relief regarding the cancellations, highlighting the importance of keeping children safe during such extreme weather events. The Iowa State Patrol has received over 200 calls for assistance in the first 12 hours of the ongoing storm, signaling the severe impacts of the winter weather.
