LOS ANGELES, CA — Actress Isabella Rossellini has officially joined the cast of “The Bitter End,” a biopic chronicling the final years of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who married King Edward VIII, leading to his abdication. Directed by Mike Newell and written by Louise Fennell, the film is set to begin filming in May 2025 in the U.K.

Rossellini, an Oscar nominee for her role in the acclaimed film “Conclave,” will portray Suzanne Blum, a French lawyer who becomes deeply intertwined with Simpson, played by Joan Collins. Blum’s character reportedly carries an obsessive grip over Simpson, highlighting themes of coercive control in their complex relationship.

“I am absolutely thrilled to join the incomparable Joan Collins and the brilliant Mike Newell in bringing this extraordinary story back to life,” Rossellini said in a statement. “Louise Fennell’s script allows us to delve into the complex and devastating relationship between these two iconic women, the profound impact they had on one another and their lasting mark on history.”

Production will be led by John Gore, Richard Holmes, and Francis Hopkinson, with Hilary Strong, Michael Foster, and Percy Gibson serving as executive producers. Worldwide sales will be managed by Embankment Films.

Gore expressed enthusiasm about the casting, stating, “Isabella Rossellini possesses an immense and captivating talent; her ability to embody complex characters with depth and authenticity inspires audiences.” He added that assembling such a stellar cast under Newell’s direction and Fennell’s gripping narrative promises an exciting cinematic experience.

In additional comments, Collins, who at 91 has taken on the role of Simpson, emphasized the depth of her character, stating, “It’s the true story of the last years of the Duchess of Windsor after the Duke dies. She was abused by this woman who took her over and took away her objects, her money, and left her practically destitute.”

The film aims to shed light on Simpson’s life post-abdication, painting a portrait of her struggles and complexities rarely explored in previous portrayals.
