Israeli Tanks At Unifil Base In Southern Lebanon

In a significant escalation of tensions, Israeli forces have breached the United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon, resulting in injuries to at least 15 peacekeepers. According to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), two Israeli Merkava tanks destroyed the main gate of the base and forcibly entered the position early on Sunday. The tanks remained within the compound for about 45 minutes before withdrawing.

Following the tanks’ departure, several rounds were fired approximately 100 meters north of the peacekeepers’ position, releasing a smoke that caused skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions among the peacekeepers despite their use of protective masks. The affected peacekeepers are receiving medical treatment.

This incident occurred amid heightened tensions and ongoing military operations by Israel against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the immediate withdrawal of UNIFIL forces from Hezbollah strongholds and combat zones, arguing that their presence puts them at risk and serves as a human shield for Hezbollah militants. However, the UN has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the peacekeeping mission in the region.

The international community has strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers. Forty countries contributing to UNIFIL have issued a joint statement condemning the recent attacks and calling for an immediate investigation. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, and European Council President Charles Michel have also demanded accountability from Israel and called for all sides to respect international humanitarian law.

The United States has expressed deep concern over the attacks, with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin contacting his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant to address the issue. Other international leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have also urged Israel to cease firing on UN peacekeepers.
