Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Fires Defense Minister Yoav Gallant Amid Ongoing Conflicts
In a surprise move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, according to an announcement from the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday. This decision comes amidst ongoing conflicts in Gaza and other regions, which have led to significant tensions between Netanyahu and Gallant.
The dismissal is not the first attempt by Netanyahu to remove Gallant from his position. A previous effort in March 2023 was met with widespread public protests against Netanyahu’s leadership, highlighting the popularity and support Gallant enjoys among the Israeli public.
Just prior to his dismissal, Gallant had been addressing critical issues related to military enlistment. He emphasized the need to enlist more combat soldiers, particularly from the haredi (ultra-Orthodox) population, in a conversation with Egoz soldiers. This move was part of a broader effort to bolster troop numbers as Israel faces a multi-front war.
Gallant had recently issued 7,000 new draft orders for ultra-Orthodox community members, following a June Supreme Court decision that ended their historical exemption from mandatory military service. This decision was seen as a necessary step to meet the operational needs of the Israeli army during the current conflicts.
Israel Katz is expected to replace Gallant as the new Defense Minister, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. This sudden change in leadership is likely to have significant implications for Israel’s military strategy and internal politics.
