Istanbul Earthquake Damage

ISTANBUL, Turkey — A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Istanbul on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the city in the Sea of Marmara.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a slightly lower magnitude of 6.02, stating the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). As the tremors hit, residents were seen rushing out of buildings across the city.

Reports indicate that the earthquake was felt in several neighboring regions, but there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Turkey’s emergency management agency is closely monitoring the situation.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Turkey, as the country sits on two major fault lines. In February 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey, resulting in significant destruction and loss of life.

The region’s seismic activity has raised concerns among scientists and officials who are continuously working on improving safety protocols in the area.

As the community reels from the latest quake, citizens have expressed their fears and concerns about potential aftershocks in the coming days.
