Jack Hoffman Nebraska Touchdown 2013 Spring Game

LINCOLN, Neb. — Jack Hoffman, the beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers fan whose 2013 touchdown run during the team’s spring game captured the hearts of millions, died Wednesday morning at the age of 19 after a long battle with cancer. The Team Jack Foundation confirmed his death but did not provide additional details.

Hoffman, who was diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer at age 5, became a symbol of hope and resilience for families affected by the disease. His iconic 69-yard touchdown run during the Nebraska spring game in 2013, orchestrated with the help of former Husker Rex Burkhead, went viral and brought national attention to childhood brain cancer research.

“At the end of the day, the way we looked at it, was Jack didn’t just score a touchdown for himself, he didn’t score a touchdown for the Red Team, he scored a touchdown for child brain cancer,” said Andy Hoffman, Jack’s father, in a 2014 interview. Andy Hoffman, who also battled cancer, passed away in 2021.

The Hoffmans used Jack’s newfound fame to advocate for increased funding and awareness for pediatric brain cancer research. Their efforts led to the creation of the Team Jack Foundation, which has awarded more than $12.6 million to research initiatives since its founding. In 2013 alone, the foundation committed $1.1 million to the cause.

Jack’s story resonated far beyond Nebraska. He received an ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports in 2013, appeared on national media outlets like CNN, Fox News, and “Good Morning America,” and even met President Barack Obama. His journey inspired countless individuals and highlighted the urgent need for advancements in pediatric cancer treatment.

Despite being in remission for several years, Jack faced ongoing health challenges. In December 2024, the Team Jack Foundation shared on Facebook that his latest scans revealed “multiple tumor locations.” Doctors had previously warned that due to the limitations of available treatments, there was a greater than 50% chance of relapse.

Services for Jack Hoffman will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Atkinson, Nebraska. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m., with the funeral service taking place Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the Atkinson Community Center.

Jack’s legacy lives on through the Team Jack Foundation and the countless lives he touched. “I think everybody in this country is taking notice of this disease, and I think it has Nebraska to thank for that,” Andy Hoffman once said. “On behalf of all parents who have a child battling a brain tumor, thank you.”
