Jack Nicholson Inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s SuperFan Gallery
Jack Nicholson, a long-time and iconic supporter of the Los Angeles Lakers, has been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame‘s James F. Goldstein SuperFan Gallery. The tribute recognizes his unwavering dedication and association with the Lakers, further cementing his position as one of the NBA’s most prominent celebrity super fans.
A fixture in the basketball world for much of his adult life, Nicholson, now 87, has been a regular sight at Lakers games, witnessing the team’s games from the best vantage point — a front-row seat near the visitors’ bench. Such was his influence and presence that some, including former Lakers forward Jamaal Wilkes, claimed, “He was not a normal person — he was Jack Nicholson.” Wilkes added that the Lakers always treated him with respect and appreciated his dedication to the team.
Over the years, Nicholson’s courtside presence became as integral to the Lakers’ identity as the players themselves, with his antics, such as allegedly mooning Boston fans during a 1980s NBA Finals game, becoming a part of NBA folklore. The rumors and stories surrounding his confrontations and interactions with players, coaches, and other fans have only served to heighten his legendary status.
Joining Nicholson in the SuperFan Gallery are other well-known personalities such as actors Billy Crystal and Spike Lee and Philadelphia 76ers fan Alan Horwitz. The Hall of Fame’s decision highlights the impact these fans have had on the culture and history of basketball. John L. Doleva, president, and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, noted, “These individuals have not only been passionate fans but have also significantly contributed to the rich culture of basketball.”
The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 13th at the Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams, marking a significant milestone for these celebrated NBA fans. The SuperFan Gallery, established in 2018, is located on the second floor of the Basketball Hall of Fame Museum and serves to celebrate the legacy of such devoted supporters. It features the stories and memorabilia of renowned fans, offering visitors a glimpse into their profound influence on the basketball community.
