Jackson Stratton Iowa Football Quarterback

Jackson Stratton, a Colorado State transfer, has suddenly found himself in a critical role for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team. Following injuries to quarterbacks Marco Lainez and Cade McNamara, Stratton has become the team’s new backup quarterback behind starter Brendan Sullivan.

Stratton, nicknamed “Shaggy” by his teammates due to his long hair resembling the character from “Scooby Doo,” has only 17 collegiate pass attempts under his belt. Despite his limited experience, he has been practicing with the starters for just one full week and has shown significant progress. “Him playing scout team all year and then getting thrown in the fire, he’s definitely progressed in the last couple of weeks,” said Brendan Sullivan, highlighting Stratton’s eagerness and dedication to improvement.

The situation has heightened the importance of keeping Sullivan healthy, as the depth behind him is thin. If Sullivan were to get injured, Stratton would be the next in line, followed by Kyler Gerardy, a dual-threat quarterback who is currently listed as a defensive back on the team’s roster.

Coach Kirk Ferentz and the team are aware of the risks and have advised Sullivan to be cautious, especially when scrambling. Sullivan, known for his aggressive playing style, has been told to balance his desire for extra yards with the need to avoid injuries.

As Iowa prepares to face UCLA, the team’s reliance on Stratton as a backup underscores the challenges and uncertainties that come with depth issues at the quarterback position).
