Jake Retzlaff Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Sexual Assault

PROVO, Utah — A Salt Lake County woman has filed a civil lawsuit against Brigham Young University quarterback Jake Retzlaff, accusing him of sexual assault. The lawsuit was submitted to the Third District Court on Wednesday.

The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe A.G., alleges that Retzlaff assaulted her at his apartment on November 22, 2023, after they connected on social media a month earlier. She is suing Retzlaff for battery, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking punitive damages.

In her lawsuit, Jane Doe A.G. claims she was with a friend at Retzlaff’s home when the two began to kiss while watching a movie. She states in the lawsuit that she “did not want to do anything more,” but Retzlaff allegedly continued to escalate the encounter, attempting to engage in sexual acts.

She reported feeling frightened and panicked as Retzlaff allegedly forced himself on her, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop. The lawsuit details that Jane Doe A.G. reached for her phone to call for help, but it was dead. After waiting for her phone to charge, she alleges that Retzlaff assaulted her.

A few days later, she went to a hospital for a rape kit examination and subsequently reported the incident to Provo police. Initially, she did not reveal Retzlaff’s name due to fear of repercussions but later identified him after being prompted by a police officer.

The officer allegedly told her that someone else had made a complaint against a football player and encouraged her not to pursue the matter, claiming “sexual assault victims never get justice.” Retzlaff’s family has declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Neither BYU nor the Provo police department responded to requests for comment on the ongoing case as of Wednesday. Retzlaff transferred to BYU from Riverside City College in California and became the starting quarterback in 2024, leading the Cougars to an 11-2 record.
