James Cameron Confirms Plans for Alita: Battle Angel Sequel
AUSTIN, Texas – James Cameron has announced intentions for a sequel to the 2019 film, Alita: Battle Angel. During a recent interview, Cameron revealed that he and director Robert Rodriguez are committed to creating at least one more film in the franchise, exciting fans who have eagerly awaited news since the first film’s release.
The original Alita film, which was based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga, was produced by Cameron and directed by Rodriguez. It received mixed reviews but grossed $405 million worldwide, quickly gaining a loyal fanbase hoping for a continuation of Alita’s story.
“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” Cameron told Empire in an interview, where he addressed reader questions. “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. We’re making progress on that.”
Following the completion of post-production on his upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron intends to shift his focus back to Alita. “Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks,” he added.
Rodriguez previously stated his enthusiasm for a sequel, mentioning that the original movie’s set is still intact in his studio. “Yeah, we want to do another one for sure. The main set from the first film is still standing in my studio,” he explained during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Podcast.
In 2023, co-producer Jon Landau confirmed that a sequel was actively in development, with Rosa Salazar expected to reprise her role as Alita. The anticipation continues to build as fans hope for news on what the story will entail.
With Cameron and Rodriguez living close to each other and currently discussing possible narrative arcs, the prospect of Alita: Battle Angel 2 is becoming increasingly plausible. While details remain sparse, the excitement surrounding the project is palpable among the film’s dedicated fanbase.
