James Gunn Lanterns Series First Look Kyle Chandler Aaron Pierre

NEW YORK, NY — James Gunn officially unveiled the first look at the upcoming Lanterns series, now in production for HBO Max. The image features Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, though both actors are seen without their Green Lantern suits.

“Excited that #Lanterns is now in production. DC Studios’ new show for @HBO and Max is something really special,” tweeted Gunn. While the duo isn’t depicted in their traditional attire, Chandler is prominently wearing the iconic Green Lantern ring.

The series is set on Earth, focusing on the mysterious death of an individual in the American heartland that Hal Jordan and John Stewart must investigate. The official synopsis describes the show as an exploration of darker themes, noting that it follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan as they navigate this complex case.

In October, Gunn discussed the series at the New York Comic Con, expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration of talented writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. “It’s something that’s been blessed from the beginning,” Gunn shared. “When we first started the DCU, we got together with a group of writers, and Tom was one of those writers. We came up with a concept for Lanterns, and it has developed very naturally into something grounded and real.”

The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, a modern cowboy, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. Gunn confirmed that Lanterns is expected to premiere in early 2026.

Reflecting on the tone of the series, Gunn stated, “It’s connected to Superman because we’ve got Guy Gardner [another Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion], but it has a very different feel. It’s exactly what I want to bring to the DCU: a varied cinematic experience with distinct films and television series that are still part of an overall connected world.”

Lanterns will consist of eight episodes, with the potential for further seasons depending on its success. As for the character arcs, Pierre’s John Stewart is a novice in the Corps, while Chandler’s Hal Jordan brings experience to their investigation.

Gunn also hinted at the series’ inspiration being akin to a detective story. “This is a terrestrial-based TV show that is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns,” he explained.

With production underway and a gripping narrative promised, anticipation builds for Lanterns, which aims to bring a unique and complex perspective to the beloved Green Lantern characters.
