Janelle Monáe Channels Cat in the Hat for Halloween 2025
Los Angeles, CA – Janelle Monáe celebrated Halloween this year by transforming into the iconic Cat in the Hat, a character she feels a strong connection with. “Halloween has always been a spiritual and sacred time for me,” Monáe told Vogue. The artist fondly recalls trick-or-treating with family and choosing costumes at local stores.
Monáe’s enthusiasm for the holiday is evident in her costume choices, which have included everything from characters in ‘The Fifth Element’ to various other imaginative personas. She views Halloween as a creative playground, stating, “As a storyteller and artist, I get to keep discovering new levels of my imagination and transformation.” This year, her inspiration came years in advance, with the Cat in the Hat idea taking shape as early as 2023.
Her costume’s intricate details included a floating stack of Dr. Seuss books, a live fish named Carlos K. Krinklebein, and even a mechanical tail created by artist John Criswell. “I am obsessed with it,” Monáe said. Her team of skilled artists contributed to the design, ensuring every detail was perfect.
Monáe hosted her annual Halloween party in Los Angeles, expanding from her initial small gatherings in Atlanta to a major event this year. “We launched The Wondaland Arts Society!” Monáe exclaimed. The celebration featured movie screenings, games, and live music, emphasizing community connection through shared experiences.
Excitement continued as Monáe teased a costume reveal for her Wondaween party, promising a transformed look throughout the night to engage her guests. “It’s not just a photo moment—it’s full performance art,” she added. Monáe is set to remain in character until the early hours, dedicated to bringing her Halloween vision to life.
