WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – A travel advisory has been issued for Jefferson County as high winds and heavy snowfall create dangerous conditions across the region. The advisory, announced by the Jefferson County Sheriffu2019s Office on Monday, warns of near-zero visibility, drifting snow, and hazardous roadways.

Bitter-cold temperatures, combined with blowing snow, have created slippery roads and reduced visibility, posing significant risks to drivers. The Jefferson County Fire & Emergency Management team urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to check weather updates before venturing out.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts exceeding 40 mph in some areas, with temperatures dropping to single digits. The combination of wind and snow has led to widespread drifting, particularly in rural areas, where roads may become impassable.

Local authorities are advising residents to stock up on essential supplies, including food, water, and medications, in case the severe weather persists. Emergency crews are on standby to respond to any incidents, but officials emphasize that prevention is key to avoiding accidents during the storm.

This advisory comes as part of a broader winter weather system affecting much of the northeastern United States. Similar warnings have been issued in neighboring counties, with meteorologists predicting the storm could last through midweek.
