Jersey Plans Affordable Housing Development on Sion Field
Plans have been submitted by Ashbe Construction for the construction of 38 affordable homes on a field located in Sion, Jersey. The proposed development includes a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom houses, aiming to address the pressing need for housing in the area.
The decision to utilize the field for affordable housing comes as a result of the Jersey government’s rezoning of several protected fields to facilitate housing developments. Deputy Hilary Jeune emphasized the necessity of addressing the housing shortage, stating that while constructing on fields is not ideal, Jersey requires additional housing solutions.
Highlighting the acute demand for housing, a report revealed that close to 1600 homes need to be built within the next three years in Jersey. Assistant Environment Minister, Ms Jeune, underscored the importance of catering to various housing needs, including accommodation suitable for young families to reside and thrive within the community.
Expressing reservations about the scale of the proposed project, Deputy Jeune noted that while the initial brief allowed for a maximum of 36 houses, the developers are suggesting a plan for 38 homes. This deviation raises challenges for the planning authorities regarding adherence to the prescribed guidelines.
Noteworthy features of the proposed development include provisions for a children’s play area, as well as the incorporation of conservation corridors for nearby bat populations. Additionally, special low-level lighting measures will be implemented to mitigate potential environmental impacts.
