In an unfolding situation within the National Football League, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has extended an olive branch to the team’s absentee edge rusher, Haason Reddick. On Tuesday, Johnson voiced his readiness to “roll out the red carpet” for Reddick, in an attempt to bring the two-time Pro Bowler back to the team.

Reddick, who was acquired by the Jets in April from the Philadelphia Eagles, has yet to report to the team. The trade deal involved a 2026 conditional pick, which could elevate from a third-round to a second-round pick based on Reddick’s performance benchmarks.

The 30-year-old’s holdout is rooted in dissatisfaction over contractual promises that Reddick claims were made upon his acquisition. Meanwhile, he has lost $4.2 million from his annual non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25 million by missing the first five weeks of the season.

Despite Reddick’s absence, the Jets’ defensive line has demonstrated formidable strength. The team boasts a fifth-ranked scoring defense, allowing 17.0 points per game, and leads in several defensive metrics, including sack rate and quarterback pressure rate.

“I don’t think any of us have seen anything like this,” Johnson commented on the situation, suggesting a blend of managerial and psychological skills might be necessary to resolve the impasse. Nevertheless, he maintained that Reddick would receive a warm welcome should he decide to reintegrate, emphasizing the positive team environment awaiting him.

The current holdout comes amid trade speculations, with the NFL trade deadline fast approaching. Analysts, such as Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report, have named potential trade destinations for Reddick, including the Washington Commanders, who have financial flexibility to accommodate him.

As the situation develops, all eyes remain on whether Reddick will reconcile with the Jets or if the team will seek to trade him to recoup their investment. For now, the football community continues to speculate on the outcome of this complex standoff.
