Jimmy Garoppolo Embraces Rivalry Ahead of Rams-49ers Showdown
WOODLAND HILLS, California — Jimmy Garoppolo, a veteran quarterback, prepares for a fierce NFC West rivalry rematch between the 6-2 Los Angeles Rams and the 6-3 San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Garoppolo knows the game will be charged with intensity.
“It’s a rivalry game — that’s real,” Garoppolo said during practice at the Rams’ facility. “In the NFL, everyone calls certain games rivalries, but this really is one. It’s intense, but that’s what makes football great.”
Garoppolo, who spent most of six seasons as the starting quarterback for the 49ers, has been backing up Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles for the past season and a half. Last December, he faced mixed reactions from 49ers fans upon returning to Levi’s Stadium, where he had a memorable career.
Garoppolo reflected, “Yeah, I was (worried about the reaction). Fans are fans. But they welcomed me back big time. I love them for that.” His era in San Francisco took him to one Super Bowl and close to another, but it was also filled with scrutiny.
Coaches from both teams, Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, represent the leadership of this storied rivalry. While Shanahan announced Garoppolo’s exit with a brusque comment after the 2022 season, McVay has a different outlook on the quarterback’s potential. “Jimmy is a guy that absolutely could step in,” McVay asserted.
Garoppolo, now 34, started the last game of the 2024 season, displaying his command of the offense by throwing for 334 yards and two touchdowns. Amid uncertainty regarding Stafford’s future, McVay emphasized his readiness for Garoppolo.
This season, Garoppolo had offers from other teams but opted to stay with the Rams, expressing his enjoyment of the atmosphere in Los Angeles. “I like to leave things open,” he said about his future. “I’m really enjoying my time here.”
Sunday will be monumental for Garoppolo, who is set to face familiar faces, including Tom Brady who will call the game for Fox. Garoppolo’s journey reflects many challenges, including his relationship with former teammate Davante Adams, which has improved significantly.
Speaking candidly, Garoppolo stated, “If you’re not evolving, you’re going to get passed up real quick.” He is confident, ready, and eager to step into the action against the 49ers this Sunday.
