João Fonseca Wimbledon Debut

LONDON, United Kingdom — Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca makes his Wimbledon debut today against British competitor Jacob Fearnley, currently ranked 51st in the ATP standings. The match is scheduled for approximately 10:30 a.m. Brasília time and will be broadcast on ESPN and Disney+ streaming services.

At just 18 years old, Fonseca has achieved a career-high ranking of 54. His most recent performance ended in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in London, where he defeated Alex Bolt and Corentin Moutet before losing to Jiri Lehecka, ranked 30th in the world.

Fearnley, 23, has garnered attention as a promising talent in British tennis, having previously defeated notable players in the junior category. However, he has struggled to replicate that success on the professional circuit, having yet to win an ATP title. He recently exited the ATP 250 in Eastbourne in the round of 16.

Fonseca and Fearnley have faced one another twice before, and Fonseca emerged victorious in both matches. During a recent training session for Wimbledon, Fonseca expressed his excitement for playing on grass. “Playing on grass is a new experience for me, and each year, I am getting used to it more,” he stated. “It’s a very different surface, and you don’t have much time to adapt, so you need to make the most of it.”

Fonseca also noted that he feels confident about his performance. “I’m practicing well, and my mentality and confidence are good. I’m sure it will be a good match. Fearnley is a good friend and a great player,” he said, highlighting the significance of competing in Wimbledon.

This marks Fonseca’s first appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon after failing to qualify last year. If he wins today, he will face American Jenson Brooksby in the second round, who is currently ranked 101st.
