John Dickerson Announces Departure from CBS Evening News in December
NEW YORK, NY — CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson announced on Monday that he will leave the network in December. His departure signals the beginning of a transformation at CBS News under new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, who recently took over the network.
This marks the first notable departure since Weiss assumed her role earlier this month. Dickerson has been with CBS since 2009 and became co-anchor of the Evening News with Maurice DuBois earlier this year.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Dickerson expressed his gratitude for his time at CBS, stating, “I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me — the work, the audience’s attention, and the honor of being a part of the network’s history.” He added, “I will miss you.”
CBS News President Tom Cibrowski praised Dickerson, calling him an epitome of quality journalism. He confirmed that Dickerson will continue to host the broadcast until the end of the year, allowing time for the network to honor his contributions.
Weiss has reportedly been exploring potential changes to the program’s format. The recent leadership changes come after the network’s head of standards, Claudia Milne, also announced her departure.
Throughout his time at CBS, Dickerson has played a significant role in many major programs, including “60 Minutes” and “Face the Nation.” He hosted multiple primary debates during the 2016 election cycle and interviewed several U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
Dickerson’s appointment as co-anchor was part of a refresh for the Evening News, which aimed to revitalize the program as viewership numbers lagged behind its competitors at ABC and NBC. Whether his replacement will come from within the network or include outside candidates remains to be seen.
As CBS News transitions to its new leadership, the media landscape continues to evolve, and high-profile changes like Dickerson’s are likely to shape its future.
