Josh Shapiro and Mark Kelly: Top Contenders for VP Kamala Harris

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, speculation is heating up around who Vice President Kamala Harris might pick as her running mate. According to ABC News, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly are considered the top candidates.

On a recent call, Harris and Shapiro discussed the critical need to focus on defeating Donald Trump, as she officially kicked off her presidential campaign. While Shapiro has noted that he’s flattered by the attention, he’s keen not to engage in any hypotheticals about the vice presidency.

Shapiro, aged 51, has made headlines over the last year for his leadership in Pennsylvania, navigating a divided legislature. His experience includes winning three statewide elections and serving as state attorney general before assuming the governorship.

Among those cheering for Shapiro’s potential candidacy is Pennsylvania Speaker of the House, Rep. Joanna McClinton. She emphasized that Shapiro stands out by successfully governing a state with split political control, a situation that many other states do not face.

In the media, Shapiro has also shown a strong alignment with President Biden, often appearing on cable networks to support Biden’s policies and positions against former President Trump.

Interestingly, Shapiro’s demeanor is evolving. He’s becoming more outspoken, recently telling Trump to stop “whining” and “sh— talking America.” His hard stance against antisemitism and support for abortion rights reflects his dedication to various issues that resonate with many voters.

Despite the buzzing conversation about potential vice presidential picks, Shapiro maintains his focus on his responsibilities in Pennsylvania. As a sitting governor, he knows he can continue in his role while campaigning for the vice presidency but would need to resign if he is elected and sworn in.

Part of the excitement around Shapiro stems from his local roots. Residents from Montgomery County, where he grew up, express pride in his achievements in the political realm.
