Ángel Martínez Journalist Lawsuit

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Journalist Vargavila Riverón filed another lawsuit today against detective Ángel Martínez for defamation and injury. This adds to the increasing number of legal actions against Martínez, who already faces multiple allegations in court.

Martínez was ordered to remain in the country and check in regularly with the Public Ministry following a court ruling. He claims that the restrictions imposed on him are unfair, stating, “I cannot leave the country because they want to attack me, that is unjust.”

In his defense, Martínez argued that he has been a stable citizen for over 55 years, with the same address and a long-standing office. He expressed frustration at being treated as a fugitive despite his history of stability, saying, “Where am I supposed to live, on the street?”

The latest developments follow an order from the Second Criminal Chamber of the National District, which required Martínez to appear in court after he failed to attend previous hearings related to an ongoing defamation case filed against him by Deputy Sergio Moya of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

Martínez was apprehended on May 26, 2025, in Puerto Plata as he was about to depart for a cruise. The judge had declared him in contempt due to his absence at scheduled court appearances, prompting the arrest.

His attorney, Carlos Mesa, announced plans to appeal the court’s decision, arguing that it does not reflect the facts of the case.

Throughout the ongoing legal battles, Martínez has controversially gained notoriety for his allegations against political figures and supposed narcotics involvement, though he has faced significant backlash and multiple lawsuits as a result.

The police statement confirmed that Martínez will be presented to the Public Ministry soon for further legal proceedings. The authorities confirmed that he is facing various allegations of extortion, defamation, and other serious charges related to his activities.
