Julian Walker Flips Commitment from Michigan to South Carolina
IRMO, South Carolina — Four-star defensive end Julian Walker has flipped his commitment from Michigan to South Carolina, signing with the Gamecocks on Thursday during the early signing period. Walker’s decision comes despite previously committing to Michigan in July.
According to 247Sports, Walker is ranked as the No. 12 edge rusher in the Class of 2026 and the No. 85 player nationally across all positions. He is the second-highest ranked recruit in South Carolina this year.
During his recruitment, South Carolina, led by defensive ends coach Lou Esposito, continued to pursue Walker as he remained engaged with them while attending games at Williams-Brice Stadium. His father, who works as an assistant strength coach for the Gamecocks, may have influenced his decision to stay closer to home.
Walker visited Michigan over the weekend for the game against Ohio State but could not be swayed to stay with the Wolverines. He previously rescheduled his visit after opting to attend North Carolina instead of the Midwest during his recruitment process.
In addition to Walker, Michigan has been able to sign five-star edge rusher Carter Meadows and several other defensive linemen, including four-stars McHale Blade and Titan Davis. However, losing Walker is seen as a significant setback for Michigan’s defensive class.
247Sports scouting director Andrew Ivins described Walker as an active edge defender capable of causing problems for offenses. He praised Walker’s athletic ability and noted areas for improvement, specifically strength after a redshirt season.
Walker represents a major addition for the Gamecocks, who are looking to strengthen their defensive lineup with his high skill level. Fans and analysts alike are anticipated to see how this decision will impact both Michigan and South Carolina moving forward.
