Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Crosses Rs 10 Crore Mark in 3 Days
NEW DELHI, India — Kangana Ranaut‘s political drama ‘Emergency‘ has crossed the Rs 10 crore mark within three days of its release, according to box office reports. The film, which opened in theaters on January 17, earned Rs 4.35 crore on Sunday, bringing its total collection to Rs 10.45 crore.
The film, directed and co-produced by Ranaut, depicts the 21-month Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Ranaut stars as Gandhi, with Anupam Kher portraying Jayaprakash Narayan, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi, and Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar.
‘Emergency’ recorded an overall occupancy rate of 18.96% in the Hindi market on Sunday, marking a significant improvement from its opening day collection of Rs 2.70 crore. The film’s performance represents Ranaut’s biggest box-office opening in five years, surpassing her previous releases like ‘Tejas,’ ‘Dhaakad,’ and ‘Thalaivii.’
In a recent interview, Ranaut revealed the financial challenges she faced while making the film. “Of course, I had financial issues while making the film. A lot of people backed out. Nobody was buying it. No OTT platform was ready to purchase it. I had to mortgage my house to make the film,” she said. She also addressed the personal attacks she endured, stating, “People against me hired PRs to harm my image. They randomly put cases against me, calling me psycho, chudail, stalker.”
‘Emergency’ marks a comeback of sorts for Ranaut, whose last major success was the 2020 sports drama ‘Panga,’ which earned Rs 2.70 crore on its opening day. The film’s strong performance comes despite limited promotional efforts and the absence of a PR team, as Ranaut emphasized during her interview.
