Kansas City Records Fourth Largest Single-Day Snowfall in History
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City International Airport recorded 11 inches of snow on Sunday, marking the fourth-largest single-day snowfall in the city’s history. It is only the eighth time since 1888 that Kansas City has received at least 10 inches of snow in a single day.
The heavy snowfall caused hazardous road conditions and delays in public transportation. Local authorities urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The National Weather Service said Sunday’s snowfall total was surpassed only by three other dates: March 23, 1912, with 16.1 inches; January 18, 1962, with 11.8 inches; and February 27, 1900, also with 11.8 inches.
Johnson County, Kansas, was among the areas heavily impacted by the storm. KMBC 9 reporter Jackson Kurtz reported from Overland Park, describing the challenging conditions.
