Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s ‘Carnival’ Dominates Charts and Sparks Controversy
The American hip hop superduo ¥$, comprising rapper Kanye West and singer Ty Dolla Sign, has made significant waves in the music industry with their latest single, “Carnival.” Released on February 15, 2024, as part of their collaborative album *Vultures 1*, the song features additional contributions from rappers Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti.
“Carnival” has achieved remarkable success, reaching number-one on the *Billboard* Hot 100 chart, marking West’s first chart-topper in 13 years and his first as a lead artist since “Stronger” in 2007. It also became the first number-one song for Rich the Kid and Playboi Carti, and the second for Ty Dolla Sign after his feature on Post Malone‘s “Psycho” in 2018. The song has topped charts in several countries, including Greece, Iceland, Latvia, and Lithuania, and has entered the top-10 in 14 other territories as well as the *Billboard* Global 200.
The song’s production, handled by ¥$, Ojivolta, TheLabCook, and The Legendary Traxster, has been praised for its energetic and expansive quality. However, “Carnival” has also attracted controversy due to West’s lyrics, which mention Taylor Swift and compare himself to controversial figures such as R. Kelly, Bill Cosby, and P. Diddy.
Recently, on October 12, 2024, West announced that he has submitted “Carnival” for major categories at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance in its genre-specific categories.
