Kashus Culpepper, a rising folk-soul vocalist from Alabama, has quickly captivated audiences with his hauntingly beautiful sound, yet he admits that the success he’s experienced since 2023 still “doesn’t feel real.” Culpepper recently discussed his journey from gospel singing in his youth and military service to his headlining performance at The Basement East in Nashville.

“I love music with a passion,” Culpepper expressed to PEOPLE. He recounted his early days in church, a place where everyone seemed to have a talent for singing, making him doubt his ability to pursue it professionally. “Everybody could sing,” he said. “And I never thought that I could go anywhere with it.”

Music became a background activity for Culpepper as he worked as a firefighter and EMT in Alabama. However, his musical aspirations reignited when he began learning the guitar during his deployment with the U.S. Navy. “My buddy found a guitar for me and I just started learning,” he recalled. Amid the constraints of base life, music became an outlet.

Upon his return, Culpepper’s experiences performing at local venues solidified his passion for music. Following encouragement to share his talent online, he gained attention for his unique sound, notably with a rendition of “Messed Up Kid.” A turning point came when Samuel L. Jackson followed him on social media, offering encouragement for his work. Culpepper remembered being overwhelmed with disbelief upon realizing the actor was a fan.

June marked his signing with Big Loud Records after releasing his debut single “After Me?” His performance at the Buckeye Country Superfest introduced him to another musical kindred spirit, Zach Bryan, with whom he shared a camaraderie rooted in their military backgrounds.

Discussing his live performances, Culpepper is known for his rich blend of country, blues, and soul. Audiences have described his concerts as transformational experiences that evoke deep emotions. His style, reminiscent of icons like Chris Stapleton and Otis Redding, has established him as a refreshing presence in Americana music.

As he looks to 2025, Culpepper is focused on releasing more music that holds personal significance. He teased fans with previews of upcoming tracks during live performances, building anticipation for the next phase of his burgeoning career.
