Kate Garraway Opens Up About Husband’s Funeral and Daughter’s Brave Words
TV presenter Kate Garraway has spoken about the emotional funeral of her husband, Derek Draper, and the brave words her daughter, Darcey, spoke to him before he passed away. Garraway shared her experiences in a tearful interview on ITV‘s Good Morning Britain. She described it as a ‘stop the clock’ moment when she learned her husband’s condition was deteriorating rapidly. Darcey’s final words to her father were, ‘Don’t worry about us, don’t worry about mum. We’ll be fine because you live on through us.’
Garraway also discussed Darcey’s role as a pallbearer at the funeral, calling it a beautiful gesture. The funeral, held at the Church of St Mary The Virgin in Primrose Hill, London, was attended by notable figures such as Tony Blair, Elton John, and Keir Starmer. The couple had initially married in the same church in September 2005.
During the interview, Garraway expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received. She received a book of condolences from viewers, including touching letters from David and Victoria Beckham and the Royal Family. She described the messages as ‘extraordinary’ and heartfelt.
In terms of her return to hosting Good Morning Britain, Garraway joked about getting a blow-dry and shared her excitement about reconnecting with the world. She acknowledged that her return might come with some rustiness but emphasized that picking herself up and moving forward is what her husband would want.
Throughout the interview, Garraway also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the carers and medical professionals who supported her and her family during Draper’s illness. She spoke about the challenges they face and the importance of a support system for both patients and caregivers.
