London, England – British actress Kate Winslet discussed her directorial debut, Goodbye June, during an event in central London on Tuesday. The film, anchored by a script written by her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders, is a Christmas-themed story filled with both joy and heartache.

Goodbye June stars Winslet as Julia, a mother diagnosed with terminal cancer. As her family gathers in her hospital room ahead of Christmas, Julia’s children, including characters played by Andrea Riseborough and Johnny Flynn, must confront their long-standing issues while grappling with their grief.

The film, which also features Timothy Spall, Stephen Merchant, and Fisayo Akinade, will hit theaters on December 12 and be available on Netflix starting December 24.

During the event, Winslet shared insights about casting the film. “I had to cast people who not only could play those parts but who were going to be lovely,” she stated. Winslet emphasized the importance of creating a positive environment on set, especially for the young actors.

Originally, Winslet intended to bring another director on board, but her connection to the story led her to take the reins herself. “He really found it fascinating,” Winslet said of Anders, appreciating the collaboration.

Winslet recalled the whirlwind of filming, stating, “We shot it in 35 days. I had to be really ready.” Balancing the demands of a large cast and numerous locations kept everyone on their toes.

Offering a unique perspective on working with child actors, Winslet explained her approach by encouraging them to embrace spontaneity. “I used all of my own experience as a mother in empowering children, showing them how to have fun,” she said.

As her film gears up for release, Winslet expressed pride not just in her own directorial efforts but also in her son’s accomplishments as a young screenwriter. “He has brilliant ideas,” she added. Goodbye June promises to be a touching exploration of family and resilience this holiday season.
