Butner, North Carolina – R. Kelly, the singer currently serving a 31-year prison sentence for sex crimes, on Tuesday claimed his life is at risk in federal prison. His attorney, Beau Brindley, filed a motion in court alleging that prison officials have endangered his client’s life by soliciting attacks against him.

During a press conference following the court hearing, Brindley claimed that Kelly, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is being targeted by individuals within the prison system. “These are people who seek to kill Mr. Kelly rather than allow the corrupt criminal conduct of those who manufactured his convictions to be exposed,” he said.

Kelly was convicted in September 2021 on multiple counts relating to sex trafficking, child pornography, and racketeering, linked to accusations that he used his fame to exploit young women and girls. His conviction was based on numerous allegations collected over decades, as he consistently denied all wrongdoing.

In April 2023, Kelly was moved from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to the federal correctional facility in Butner, North Carolina. Brindley asserts that recent information indicates that the threats to Kelly’s life have escalated significantly since his transfer. He alleged that two inmates claimed they were approached by prison officials to murder Kelly.

Brindley suggested that these attempts included efforts to poison Kelly’s food. He pointed to a sworn statement from a terminally ill inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, who claimed that he was offered freedom in exchange for carrying out Kelly’s murder.

Federal prosecutors have not commented on the allegations but are seeking to have Kelly’s latest motion sealed due to its sensitive nature, which involves naming child sex victims. Meanwhile, Kelly’s team plans to petition President Donald Trump for a pardon, arguing that he is in urgent need of protection.

As of now, Kelly, 58, is serving his sentence and remains ineligible for release until 2045. His attorneys maintain that the threats against him are serious and require immediate action to ensure his safety.
