Kenny Law, ‘Moonshiners’ Star and Outlaw Legend, Dies at 68
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. — Everett Kenneth “Kenny” Law, a beloved cast member of Discovery Channel‘s “Moonshiners” and a third-generation moonshiner, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the age of 68. His death was announced by Law’s Choice Distillery, though no official cause of death has been released.
Law, known for his rebellious spirit and charm, was a fixture in the Rocky Mount community. He gained national fame through his appearances on “Moonshiners,” where he showcased his deep-rooted moonshining heritage. His cousin, Henry Law, revealed that Kenny had been battling health issues, including heart problems and diabetes, and was hospitalized due to a blood infection prior to his passing.
Born on December 8, 1956, Kenny was the son of the late Everett “Peanut” Law and Norma Jean Divers. He graduated from Franklin County High School in 1975 and followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Owen Law, as a moonshiner. His life was marked by daring escapades, including a 1977 propane explosion during an indoor moonshining operation. Despite being initially unharmed, Kenny re-entered the burning building to save his father, suffering severe burns in the process. He spent months recovering at UVA Hospital but returned to his adventurous lifestyle.
In the 1980s, Kenny founded Law’s Roofing Company, which he operated for 20 years. During the 1990s, he contributed to his community by donating time and materials to install roofs for Habitat for Humanity homes in Rocky Mount. His passion for antiques also led him to a successful side business of picking, restoring, and reselling vintage items.
Kenny is survived by his daughter, Kenzie Wright, and her husband, Nathan; grandsons, Atlas and Fox Wright; brothers, David Law and Ronnie Law; and cousin Henry Lee Law, who was like a brother to him. He often spoke of his daughter as his proudest accomplishment, calling her his “pride and joy.”
The Discovery Channel released a statement mourning his loss: “We’re deeply saddened about Kenny Law’s passing. He was a treasured member of our Moonshiners community since season eight. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Shine on, Kenny.”
