Kershaw Nears Career Finale Amid Tribute from Fellow Players

LOS ANGELES, CA — As the MLB season winds down, Clayton Kershaw prepares for his final regular-season start at Dodger Stadium this Friday. At 37 years old, Kershaw’s career is drawing to a close, prompting tributes from players across the league.
In mid-June, Kershaw was honored with a signed jersey from Joe Musgrove, a fellow pitcher and longtime Padres fan. Musgrove, who has rarely sent such jerseys during his career, expressed admiration for Kershaw’s impact on baseball. ‘He’s made a big impact on this game — not only as a player but for the way he handles himself,’ said Musgrove.
As Kershaw makes what could be his last appearance, requests for his signature have noticeably increased. ‘It’s slightly increased from years past,’ Kershaw noted, adding that sometimes he receives numerous requests during a homestand, while other times none.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes Kershaw will be a crucial part of the postseason roster, saying, ‘There’s a place for him on it. The bottom line is I trust him.’ Kershaw, who is hoping to contribute after missing out on last year’s playoff run, is focused on pitching well.
He reflects on his journey, stating, ‘You don’t think that you’re the old guy until it happens, and then you are.’ His teammates have acknowledged Kershaw’s competitive nature and impressive talent.
Many players have sought to honor him, including the Reds’ Andrew Abbott, who aimed to get a signed jersey after observing Kershaw’s popularity and skill firsthand. ‘I watched Kersh since I was a kid,’ Abbott said.
As the final games approach, Kershaw is looking to savor his remaining moments while maintaining his competitive edge. ‘You want to go out competing, just like you always did,’ he said. This season has been filled with significant milestones for Kershaw, including reaching 3,000 strikeouts.
