HOUSTON, Texas — Kevin Durant, the 15-time NBA All-Star, hinted at a potential contract extension with the Houston Rockets during Monday’s media day. Durant, who joined the Rockets earlier this summer via trade, expressed hope about extending his stay beyond the 2025-26 season.

“I do see myself signing a contract extension,” Durant told reporters at Toyota Center. “I can’t tell you exactly when that will happen, but I do see it happening.” This statement comes as the Rockets prepare for a new season, aiming to build a strong team around the veteran forward.

Durant’s connections to Houston run deep, as he played college basketball at the University of Texas and knows several members of the Rockets’ staff, including assistant coach Royal Ivey and scout DJ Augustin. “It felt organic and natural coming into the gym, being a Houston Rocket for the first time,” he said. “I always had respect for this coaching staff, this fanbase, this state, this city. It feels right.”

Having worked with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka during his tenure with the Brooklyn Nets, Durant shared his appreciation for the coaching style and philosophy. “Ime has always been one of those guys that understood what I brought to the table,” he stated. “He always respected that and gave me my space to be me.”

Last season, while with the Phoenix Suns, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, showcasing his elite skill by shooting 52.7% from the field and 43.0% from beyond the arc. General manager Rafael Stone did not comment on current contract talks, but Durant is set to earn $54.7 million this season as the final year of his current contract.

As of now, there is no defined deadline for negotiations, and the Rockets hold Bird rights, allowing them to exceed the salary cap to retain Durant. If an extension is not finalized by next July, Durant could enter free agency as one of the top players available.

Durant’s arrival in Houston sparked high expectations, and management is likely eager to lock in the star forward for the long term. While the 37-year-old deals with concerns about his injury history, he remains a highly sought-after talent with the potential to lead the team.
