Kevin Kline Attributes 35-Year Marriage to Phoebe Cates and Avoiding the ‘Hollywood Marriage’ Label
Kevin Kline, the renowned actor known for his roles in films like “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Fish Called Wanda,” has reflected on the secret to his enduring marriage to Phoebe Cates. In a recent interview with Business Insider at the Toronto International Film Festival, Kline emphasized that their 35-year relationship works because it is not a “Hollywood marriage.”
Kline joked that if a Hollywood marriage lasts more than six months, it’s already a record. He and Cates have never lived in Hollywood, instead choosing to raise their family on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This decision, along with their preference for staying out of the spotlight, has been crucial to their long-lasting union.
Kline praised Cates, calling her a great wife, mother, and person who keeps him honest. “She’s got her head on her shoulders, unlike me. I usually have my head on her shoulders, too,” he said, adding humorously, “Except for in interviews.”
The couple met during auditions for the 1983 film “The Big Chill” and began their romantic relationship in 1985. They married in 1989, the same year Kline won an Oscar for his role in “A Fish Called Wanda.” Cates is known for her iconic roles in films such as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Gremlins.” She retired from acting in the 1990s and now runs a boutique on the Upper East Side.
Kline and Cates have two adult children, Owen and Greta. Kline’s current project includes starring in the Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” created by Alfonso CuarĂ³n and costarring Cate Blanchett.
