Key Social Security Changes in 2025: What You Need to Know
As the year 2025 approaches, significant changes are set to impact Social Security benefits, affecting over 70 million Americans. One of the most notable changes is the 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), announced on October 10, 2024. This adjustment will result in a hike in benefits for Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients starting January 1, 2025.
The COLA increase will see Social Security benefits rise from $3,822 to $4,018 per month for those at full retirement age, which is typically 67 years. For SSDI beneficiaries, the payment will also increase to $4,018 per month. SSI recipients will see their monthly payments rise to $967 for single individuals and $1,460 for married couples.
In addition to the COLA increase, there are changes to the payment schedules. SSI beneficiaries will receive their payments on the first day of each month, regardless of their birth date. For Retired Workers, Survivors, and Disabled Individuals (RSDI), the payment dates vary based on when they claimed benefits. Those who claimed benefits before May 1997 will receive payments on the 3rd of each month, while those who claimed benefits after May 1997 will receive payments based on their birth date: the second Wednesday for those born between the 1st and 10th, the third Wednesday for those born between the 11th and 20th, and the fourth Wednesday for those born between the 21st and 31st.
The Social Security tax cap will also increase in 2025, rising from $168,600 in 2024 to $176,100. This change affects the amount of income subject to Social Security taxes.
Other initiatives by the Social Security Administration include efforts to streamline the application process for SSI benefits. These include excluding food assistance from income calculations, digitizing signatures on forms, and implementing an online application process to reduce customer burden and operational costs.
Beneficiaries should note that if a payment date falls on a holiday or weekend, the SSA will issue the payment on the preceding business day to avoid disruptions. The updated payment dates for January and February 2025 have been confirmed, helping beneficiaries plan their monthly expenses more effectively.
