Killeen Prepares for Winter Weather, Closes Key Bridge
KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – The City of Killeen is actively preparing for cooler weather expected on Thursday, January 9, 2025, and Friday, January 10, 2025. Below-freezing temperatures are anticipated, with a chance of winter precipitation, including freezing rain, sleet, or snow.
The city announced the closure of the W.S. Young Bridge starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The bridge, located from 2201 S. W.S. Young Dr. to Atkinson Ave., will remain closed until winter weather conditions improve. Traffic control devices will be in place, and drivers are advised to use alternate routes.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will treat roadways in the area to mitigate icy conditions. Killeen’s Transportation division has sand spreaders and other equipment ready to address potential hazards. Additionally, salt has been delivered to all fire and police stations, as well as City Hall, to ensure preparedness.
Hunter Reeves, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Fort Worth, told the Killeen Herald that while snow is unlikely, freezing rain and sleet are possible after 3 a.m. on Thursday. He emphasized that most of the impact will be felt further north, near the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Reeves noted that Killeen could experience isolated patches of ice, particularly on bridges and overpasses, but rain expected Thursday afternoon may help mitigate the risk. Temperatures are forecasted to reach a high of 35 degrees on Thursday, with winds of 5 to 10 mph.
The city urged residents to stay safe, plan ahead, and avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions. “Stay safe, plan ahead, and avoid unnecessary travel during hazardous conditions,” the city advised in a statement.
