The recent departure of long-time Golden State Warriors‘ shooting guard, Klay Thompson, has marked a significant shift for the team as it prepares for the upcoming NBA season. Thompson, a pivotal figure in Golden State’s successes over the past twelve years, opted to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency this summer.

During an interview with ESPN, Draymond Green, renowned for his tenacity on the court, expressed his approach to competing against Thompson. Green, known for his close relationship with his teammates including Thompson and Stephen Curry, stated, “I’m going to run through his chest,” emphasizing the competitive spirit he plans to maintain, akin to his matchups with other close friends, like Los Angeles Lakers‘ star LeBron James.

Stephen Curry, Thompson’s long-time backcourt partner, reflected on the impact of Thompson’s move on the Warriors. Curry acknowledged the challenges of moving forward without Thompson, sharing his feelings during Warriors’ training camp in Hawaii. “Life without [Klay] began last week,” Curry remarked to ESPN, revealing the emotional and strategic adjustments the team faces.

Head coach Steve Kerr highlighted the efforts to adapt to new team dynamics, as the Warriors integrate players like Buddy Hield into the offense. “One of the reasons we are excited to get Buddy Hield is because we will run some of the same stuff that we ran for Klay,” Kerr explained, indicating the transition plans aimed at maintaining the team’s offensive prowess.

The Warriors are anticipating the role of their young core, with expectations placed on players like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody to step up in Thompson’s absence. Meanwhile, organization’s General Manager, Mike Dunleavy Jr., expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt, though he acknowledged the emotional void left by Thompson’s departure. “We’re trying to make it as normal as possible,” Dunleavy stated.

Thompson’s first encounter against the Warriors as a Maverick is scheduled for November 12 at the Chase Center, a game expected to be emotionally charged for both teams and fans. Curry plans to fully engage in honoring Thompson’s contributions to the team, but he remains focused on competition after the ceremony. “After that, it’s war,” Curry concluded, underscoring the competitive nature central to their friendship.

Despite the competitive undertones, Green described the split as “a happy divorce,” emphasizing the ongoing personal connections between the players. Although their professional paths diverge, Green sees it as “the next chapter” for all involved, allowing them to explore new opportunities while cherishing their shared achievements.
