Jj Redick Lakers Head Coach Contract Extension

LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has received a contract extension before his second season, general manager Rob Pelinka announced on Thursday.

Redick, who initially signed a deal reportedly worth $32 million before the 2024-25 season, led the Lakers to a 50-32 record in his first year. However, the team was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs.

Before his coaching tenure, Redick had no NBA coaching experience, having played 15 seasons with six teams. After retiring in 2021, he worked as an ESPN analyst before joining the Lakers.

Pelinka noted that the decision to extend Redick’s contract was made to reinforce that he is the basketball leader for the team in terms of coaching and performance on the court.

This extension follows the recent three-year contract signed by star player Luka Dončić, which runs through 2028, with a player option for 2029-30.

With LeBron James‘ future uncertain as he approaches the 2025-26 season on an expiring deal, the Lakers appear to be banking on Redick and Dončić to bring the team back into championship contention.

Pelinka’s comments about James sparked interest about the veteran’s long-term relationship with the franchise. Acknowledging James’ significance, Pelinka emphasized the team’s commitment to surrounding the four-time MVP with talent to maximize his remaining playing years.

As discussions about James’ future heat up, many fans speculate if he will seek a contract extension or consider retirement as he approaches his 40s. Pelinka’s statements indicate the Lakers are proactively strategizing to maintain competitiveness for the duration of James’ career.

The Lakers’ management is determined to equip both James and fellow superstar Anthony Davis with complementary players to remain a strong contender in the competitive Western Conference.

As the NBA season progresses, the front office’s ability to attract star players and build a cohesive roster will be vital for their success. The future of the Lakers hinges not only on immediate performance but also on the legacy that James aims to cement.
