Las Vegas Aces Find Strength in Faith Before WNBA Finals

LAS VEGAS — As the Las Vegas Aces prepare for the WNBA Finals, players are opening up about the role of faith in their lives. Forward NaLyssa Smith discussed her spiritual journey with pastor Heiden Ratner, who leads pregame chapels that have helped her feel closer to God.
“This year, I’ve attended every chapel because it fits my schedule,” Smith said during Thursday’s media day. “I believe that growing my relationship with God has contributed to my success this season.”
Two-time WNBA champion Jewell Loyd echoed similar sentiments, stating, “With our schedules, we don’t always have the chance to go to church. But the pregame chapel offers a reset before games.” Loyd appreciates the mindfulness the chapel provides and credits Ratner and Kinsey Minter from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for their support.
“I think prayer goes a long way,” Loyd added. “Going to chapel has become a normal ritual for me. I haven’t missed one yet.”
Recent addition Dana Evans finds peace in the chapel environment. “Chapel calms me when emotions run high before games,” Evans said. “Ratner is amazing; his messages always resonate with me.”
On Wednesday, Ratner hosted a prayer session at WALK Church, focusing on the Aces as they gear up to face the Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of the Finals. His role extends beyond game days, as he provides spiritual guidance throughout the season.
A'ja Wilson expressed appreciation for Ratner’s unique style, saying, “He understands what we go through as athletes. His analogies really resonate with us.”
Megan Gustafson highlighted Ratner’s ability to connect sports and faith: “He shares stories that relate to our experiences and ties them to scripture. It really resonates with us.”
Wilson cherishes her personal moments with Ratner, often praying together before games. “He takes time out to pray for me during crucial moments,” she said. “I hope everyone has someone praying for them.” Ratner’s influence has created a bond between spirituality and the team’s performance as they strive for another championship.
