New York Voter Registration Deadline

As of Saturday, October 26, 2024, New York residents have reached the final day to register to vote for the upcoming November General Election. This deadline is crucial for those who wish to participate in the electoral process.

To be eligible to register and vote in New York, individuals must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old by Election Day (November 5, 2024), and residents of the state for at least 30 days before the election. They must not be in prison for a felony conviction, ruled mentally incompetent by a court, or claim voting rights elsewhere.

New York City residents can register to vote online through the city’s voter registration portal, in person at the DMV or their local Board of Elections, or by mail. The same options are available for residents outside of New York City, who must use the New York State Board of Elections website or visit their local Board of Elections office.

Early voting in New York begins on October 26 and continues through November 3. Voters can find their assigned early voting sites, which may differ from their Election Day poll sites. Polling hours vary, with weekend hours typically from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m..

Registered voters do not need to show ID unless they did not provide identification with their registration. First-time voters must provide identification either on or with their voter registration application. Acceptable IDs include a driver’s license number, non-driver’s ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number.

In addition to the presidential and congressional races, New York voters will also decide on several ballot proposals, including a statewide question on abortion protection and additional safeguards against discrimination, as well as five New York City-specific proposals related to anti-discrimination protections, public safety legislation, capital planning, and support for minority and women-owned businesses.

Voters can also request absentee or mail ballots, with the deadline to request these being October 26. Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 5 and can be received until November 12.
