Last-Minute Rush for REAL ID Before May 7 Deadline

Camden, New Jersey — As the May 7 deadline approaches for Americans to obtain a REAL ID, residents are scrambling to secure their identification at local motor vehicle departments. Scott Case, a frequent business traveler from Collingswood, New Jersey, arrived at the Camden Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) on Monday, realizing the urgency of his situation.
“I’ve known about it and I’ve been putting it off, so some of it’s on me,” said Case, who left the MVC without an ID. He expressed concern for others without passports, saying, “I feel bad for anybody who doesn’t have a passport.”
Since Congress enacted the REAL ID Act in 2005 to enhance national security for identification, states have faced pressure to ensure compliance. Although residents can still use non-compliant licenses for driving and everyday identification, REAL IDs will be necessary for domestic air travel starting May 7.
The Department of Homeland Security has consistently delayed the enforcement deadline over the years, but this time, the enforcement is set in stone, leading to chaotic scenes at DMVs across the country. Customers reported long lines and frustration as they attempted to secure their REAL IDs before the deadline.
“It’s not gonna happen,” said Toe Cooper, a driver from Burlington Township. He noted difficulties in booking appointments online, stating, “I’ve been on there every night looking. There’s nothing on there.”
The MVC is currently issuing about 25,000 REAL IDs per week and is adding thousands of appointments daily. According to spokesperson William Connolly, “Demand is very high right now,” not just in New Jersey but nationwide as states prepare for the enforcement date.
Residents in Camden filled the MVC office, eager for assistance. Bruce Beegal, who was at the office with his daughter, faced additional hurdles as they were missing a required document for their appointment. “This is a joke,” Beegal remarked, frustrated that they would have to revisit the process after the deadline.
While some states have implemented measures like Saturday REAL ID events and extended hours to accommodate the surging demand, many residents continue to struggle with appointment availability. To mitigate these issues, the MVC has introduced “REAL ID Tuesdays” to offer more appointment slots before the deadline.
With only days left, many residents are becoming anxious, as some may have no plans to travel or already possess a passport. Majority Leader Greenwald is advocating for an online application system to streamline the process, stating that in the 21st century, relying solely on in-person appointments is outdated.
“This bill aims to alleviate that headache, increase compliance, and ensure no one is left facing unnecessary disruptions at the airport,” Greenwald added. As the deadline approaches, individuals without a REAL ID or other acceptable forms of ID will be at risk of facing additional wait times or being denied boarding altogether.
