Couple Arrested Miami Airport Incident

MIAMI, Fla. — A Florida couple was arrested on March 2 after they allegedly assaulted airport employees at Miami International Airport when they were denied boarding for a late flight to Cancún, Mexico.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Rafael Seirafe-Novaes, 40, and Beatriz Rapoport De Campos Maia, 29, were taken into custody following the incident. Video footage captured the altercation occurring around 8:35 a.m. as the couple attempted to force their way onto American Airlines Flight 2494.

According to authorities, the couple became irate after arriving late and pushing through the jet bridge despite verbal warnings from airline staff and no trespassing signs. Seirafe-Novaes allegedly pushed two airline employees, while Maia is accused of both pushing the staff and throwing coffee at them.

A spokesperson for American Airlines confirmed the incident and stated, “Acts of violence are not tolerated by American Airlines, and we are committed to working closely with law enforcement in their investigation.” The airline is collaborating with the police as a part of their ongoing inquiry.

The Miami-Dade County police responded to the scene with multiple units, resulting in a delayed departure for the flight, which ultimately left without the couple about 30 minutes later.

Seirafe-Novaes was charged with resisting an officer without violence and trespassing. Meanwhile, Maia faced two counts of battery and trespassing. Both individuals posted bond for their release on Monday.

There is no information available yet on whether the couple will face a ban from future American Airlines flights. It remains unclear if they have retained legal representation as they navigate the judicial process.

Under federal law, committing acts of violence at an international airport can carry serious penalties, including up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $250,000 if convicted.
