Leap Year Proposal: Conservative MP Vicky Ford Pops the Question to Husband in Romantic Gesture
Conservative Member of Parliament for Chelmsford, Vicky Ford, recently shared a heartwarming tale of love and commitment as she reminisced on the leap year proposal she made to her husband, Dr. Hugo Ford, back in 1996.
The unique proposal, a tradition believed to have originated in the 5th century, happened while the couple was enjoying a meal, marking the special date of 29 February.
Vicky Ford, 56, shared that the proposal was a nerve-wracking experience but also a profound declaration of her deep love for her partner, whom she met during their time as students at the University of Cambridge.
During the memorable evening, Mrs. Ford presented Dr. Ford with a pair of cufflinks in the shape of a knot and bravely asked him to ‘tie the knot’ with her, a moment that she humorously recalled, saying, ‘Could you just wait until after we’ve finished our main course?’
Reflecting on the proposal, Mrs. Ford revealed that at the time, Dr. Ford was preoccupied with caring for his ailing mother, prompting her to take the opportunity to relieve some of the pressure by asking for his hand in marriage.
The decision to propose on a leap year day held significant meaning for Vicky Ford, as she expressed her unwavering love for Dr. Ford and her desire to solidify their bond, emphasizing, ‘I didn’t want to let him go.’
The couple’s engagement lasted a mere two months before they tied the knot, creating a joyous memory for Dr. Ford’s mother, who was present for their whirlwind union.
Amidst sharing their love story, Mrs. Ford encouraged others to consider the beauty of marriage, noting it as a transformative and fulfilling experience that she highly recommends to those contemplating it.
