Leeds A6110 Elland Road Improvement Consultations

Leeds, England – Leeds City Council has initiated a public consultation to enhance travel options along the A6110 Ring Road and A643 Elland Road, aimed at making the routes safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. This consultation is crucial as the A6110 and A643 serve over 38,000 daily users, linking south Leeds to the city center.

Since 2019, the area has seen 26 collisions resulting in 31 casualties, including one fatality and ten serious injuries. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for improvements along these crucial routes. The proposed upgrades seek to tackle high collision rates, address congestion, and expand pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

The council invites feedback from local businesses, residents, and commuters as they consider various proposals. Key among them is proposed minimal adjustments to the Millshaw roundabout, which could align with future tram routes connecting Leeds City Centre and South Leeds. The council is collaborating with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to ensure any changes will work harmoniously with planned tram line developments.

Once the tram route is confirmed, further consultations for adjustments to the roundabout will take place. This initiative falls in line with the council’s broader objectives to reduce carbon emissions, promote active travel, and pursue Vision Zero goals, which aim to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries in Leeds by 2040.

Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader, commented, “This scheme is a vital step towards creating safer, more accessible routes for active travel through Leeds. Your input is essential to ensure these changes meet community needs.”

In support, Cllr Peter Carlill, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, added, “It’s an exciting time for transport in West Yorkshire. By improving facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus users, we are encouraging greener travel choices.”

The consultation will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8. Residents are encouraged to attend drop-in events to view proposal boards, engage with council representatives, and fill out online or paper surveys. For additional information or to request paper surveys, residents can contact the council via email or phone.
