Lester Holt to Step Down as NBC Nightly News Anchor

WASHINGTON — Lester Holt will anchor his final broadcast of “NBC Nightly News” on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The announcement of his departure marks the end of a significant chapter in network journalism.
Holt, 66, has been a prominent figure on the program since 2015, delivering critical news stories during a transformative decade that included the COVID-19 pandemic and major political events. He expressed a desire to focus more on long-form storytelling and investigative journalism through his role on “Dateline,” where he has served as a primary anchor since 2006.
In an interview, Holt shared insights into his decision. “The big buy-in was to be able to do more of the hours,” he said. He noted his commitment to detailed storytelling, referencing his experiences covering various social issues, including asthma crises and economic challenges. “I want to be involved in deeper projects, having the freedom to dedicate time to important interviews and stories,” he explained.
Following Holt’s exit, NBC national correspondent Tom Llamas will take over as the anchor of “NBC Nightly News.” Llamas, who has contributed significantly to NBC News for the past four years, will continue his primetime streaming program “Top Story with Tom Llamas. “I look forward to working with the world-class journalists at Nightly News and Top Story to bring viewers the most important stories every night,” Llamas said in a statement.
Both reporters have emphasized their commitment to journalistic integrity. Llamas described Holt as a trusted broadcaster, promising to uphold those values in his new role. Holt remains invested in his profession, stating, “I’m still running” and is enthusiastic about his future with “Dateline.” His final “NBC Nightly News” broadcast serves as a moment for viewers to honor his contributions while anticipating the next chapter in broadcast journalism.
