Leylah Fernandez, the 22-year-old Canadian tennis player, has been making significant waves in the tennis world with her recent performances. Born in Montreal, Quebec, and currently residing in Miami, Florida, Fernandez has been coached by her father, Jorge Fernandez, since the beginning of her career.

In the recent Wuhan Open, Fernandez demonstrated her resilience by coming from a set down to defeat Anna Shnaider in the first round and later escaping Kamilla Rakhimova in a third-set tiebreak to advance to the third round. Although she was eventually knocked out by Zheng Qinwen in the round of 16, her all-court duel with Zheng drew rave reviews for its intensity and skill.

Fernandez has also had notable performances in other recent tournaments. At the China Open in Beijing, she was knocked out in the second round by Peyton Stearns, and in the Cincinnati Open, she outlasted Anna Shnaider to make her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal of 2024, only to be outlasted by Jessica Pegula in a three-hour thriller.

Looking ahead, Fernandez is set to headline the Canadian team alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime at the 2025 United Cup in Perth, marking the beginning of the new tennis season.

Fernandez’s career highlights include winning three singles titles, with her most recent title coming from the 2023 Hong Kong Open. She also reached the final of the US Open in 2021, where she upset several top-ranked players, including Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, en route to her maiden Grand Slam final.
