Liberty Flames Set to Face James Madison Dukes in Key Matchup

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Liberty Flames football team will host the James Madison Dukes on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, in what marks the first renewal of the Battle of the Blue Ridge since 2014. Liberty, coming off two straight road losses, carries a 1-2 record into this non-conference matchup at Williams Stadium.
James Madison, at 1-1, is looking to bounce back after a loss to Louisville on Sept. 5, where they trailed 14-6 before falling 28-14. The Dukes opened their season with a commanding 45-10 victory over Weber State, in which quarterback Alonza Barnett III threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns across their first two games.
Liberty’s recent performance has raised concerns. After a solid 28-7 start against Maine, the Flames struggled against Bowling Green, losing 23-13 on Sept. 13. In that game, quarterback Ethan Vasko finished with 194 yards but recorded two interceptions. Running back Evan Dickens had a decent outing, rushing for 96 yards with a touchdown on 15 carries.
This upcoming clash provides a stage for both teams to improve their records and showcase their skills. James Madison coach Curt Cignetti emphasized the importance of a strong rushing attack, stating, “Our running game is critical to our identity, and we have to get back to that.” Meanwhile, Liberty seeks to recover its momentum as it approaches the midpoint of its season.
The matchup will air live on ESPNU, with commentary from Courtney Lyle and Rene Ingoglia. Fans can also live-stream the game through the ESPN app. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
