Logan VanWey Advances to Triple-A, Just Steps From MLB

JOPLIN, Mo. — Logan VanWey, a promising pitcher from Missouri Southern State University, has made waves in the Houston Astros‘ minor league system. Following an impressive 2023 season, he was promoted to Triple-A Sugar Land, one step away from Major League Baseball. VanWey described the call-up as a significant compliment from the Astros organization.
“It’s crazy to think about,” said VanWey, reflecting on his journey through the Astros’ ranks. “I was happy just ending the year in Double-A. Starting at High-A and ending at Double-A is something I didn’t expect.”
VanWey’s rise through the farm system has been meteoric. He began the season playing at High-A Asheville, where his performance earned him a swift promotion to Double-A Corpus Christi. There, he continued to shine, showcasing his skills on the mound and quickly becoming a key player.
In Double-A, VanWey posted a 3.14 earned run average (ERA) over 23 games, illustrating both his talent and his potential for success at higher levels. His ability to handle pressure and deliver solid performances has not gone unnoticed.
“Logan has a unique skill set that allows him to thrive in high-stress situations,” said Jake McCoy, his pitching coach at Corpus Christi. “He has the mentality of a big leaguer, and I believe he’ll fit in seamlessly when he gets there.”
The transition from college baseball to the professional level can be daunting, but VanWey has managed it with poise. He attributes his success to hard work and the valuable lessons learned during his time at Missouri Southern State. “The coaching staff there really prepared me for this,” he noted, praising his former coaches for their support.
As VanWey gears up for his stint with Sugar Land, he remains focused on his ultimate goal: to make his Major League debut. “I’m taking it one day at a time, but stepping onto a big league field is the dream,” VanWey said.
With the Astros narrowly missing the 2023 postseason, there’s potential for VanWey to earn a spot on the Major League roster should an opportunity arise. His determination and impressive stats will certainly make him a strong candidate as the 2024 season approaches.
