St. Louis Schools Extend Winter Break Due to Hazardous Road Conditions

St. Louis Winter Storm School Closures 2024

Winter break got a surprise extension on Monday for thousands of students across the St. Louis region due to a widespread winter storm. Some districts pushed classes back even further as roads remained hazardous.

Numerous school districts announced closures after snow and ice caused transportation issues across the area’s roads on Monday. Many closures were announced around 3 p.m. Monday as numerous roadways were still covered and slick nearly 12 hours after the last of the winter storm’s snow fell early Monday morning.

Some of the area’s largest districts were among the earliest to announce their closures for Tuesday, including Francis Howell (AMI Day), Fort Zumwalt, and Wentzville.

Area roads were still being cleared by IDOT and MODOT on Monday, so drivers were urged to delay travel or postpone plans. Road conditions remained hazardous, and with temperatures not expected to get above freezing until the weekend, it will take time and patience to get the conditions improved.

Morning temperatures throughout the region will be down in the single digits with afternoon highs in the 20s through Friday. There is also another chance of snow on Friday. This system will be farther away from us than the past weekend’s snowstorm, so impacts are not expected to be as significant.
