Luca Guadagnino to Adapt ‘American Psycho’ for Lionsgate
Renowned director Luca Guadagnino is reportedly in final negotiations to create a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel “American Psycho“. This project, described by insiders as a fresh take rather than a remake, is set to be penned by acclaimed screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and produced by Frenesy Films in association with Lionsgate.
Ellis’s novel, originally published in 1991, has been noted for its controversial graphic content centered around a Manhattan investment banker turned serial killer. The narrative’s detailed exploration of its milieu and violent themes led to censorship in various regions worldwide.
The first cinematic adaptation of “American Psycho”, directed by Mary Harron and starring Christian Bale, has gained a cult following since its release in 2000. However, Guadagnino’s upcoming project intends to offer a new perspective on the original text. Simon Pressman is set to executive produce the film through Pressman Film, aiming to carry forward the legacy of his father, Edward R. Pressman, who produced the first adaptation.
Expressing enthusiasm about the project, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson remarked, “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
Guadagnino’s recent box office success, “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, has positioned him as a top talent in the industry. His film “Queer” featuring Daniel Craig premiered at the London Film Festival and will be released by A24 in November.
Burns, notable for creating the Apple TV+ limited series “Extrapolations” and his work on films such as “The Report” and “Side Effects,” is also developing a Netflix series “Thumblite,” starring Rosamund Pike. Both Guadagnino and Burns are represented by prominent talent agencies.
